I was at a local amusement park with my 3 year old daughter recently. She begged me to win her a Spongebob Squarepants toy at one of the side games where you knock over bottles with bean bags. Being a sucker for my little girl, I plunked down my money for three beanbags. I threw the first beanbag with a mighty heft and a stout heart, but completely missed the bottle. With a determined soul and a form that would impress Roger Clemens, I threw another one. Missed again. After my third toss, I was completely disheartened, knowing that I did not measure up. No matter how hard I tried or how sincere or impressive I was, I had missed the mark.

Romans 3:23 says "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." The Greek word for sinned means "to miss the mark." No matter how hard we may try, no matter how sincere we are, no matter how impressive we seem to all those around us, we are still going to miss the mark.
