Preaching Articles

"It is a poor sermon that gives no offense; that neither makes the hearer displeased with himself nor with the preacher."  ~ George Whitefield

“I have never once feared the devil, but I tremble every time I enter the pulpit.” ~ John Knox

"Preaching is effective as long as the preacher expects something to happen—not because of the sermon, not even because of the preacher, but because of God." ~ John Hines

"When preaching is done right, it can change lives. When it is done badly, my failure goes beyond the utterly human." ~ John Ortberg

"People have an idea that the preacher is an actor on a stage and they are the critics, blaming or praising him. What they don't know is that they are the actors on the stage; he (the preacher) is merely the prompter standing in the wings, reminding them of their lost lines.” ~ Søren Kierkegaard

“I don't like to hear cut and dried sermons. No—when I hear a man preach, I like to see him act as if he were fighting bees.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

"The first duty of the gospel preacher is to declare God's law and to show the nature of sin." ~ Martin Luther

"Preach not calmly and quietly as though you were asleep, but preach with fire and pathos and passion." ~ Charles Spurgeon

“Leave Christ out? O my brethren, better leave the pulpit out altogether. If a man can preach one sermon without mentioning Christ’s name in it, it ought to be his last, certainly the last that any Christian ought to go to hear him preach.” ~ Charles Spurgeon

“The reason most preaching is ignored today is that it deserves to be." ~ Alistair Begg

"If there is no controversy in your ministry, there is probably very little content in your preaching." ~ Al Mohler

“I would have every minister of the gospel address his audience with the zeal of a friend, with the generous energy of a father, and with the exuberant affection of a mother.” ~ Francois Fenelon

"Apostolic preaching is not marked by its beautiful diction, or literary polish, or Cleverness of expression, but Operates "in demonstration of the Spirit and of power." ~ Arthur Wallis

"I would say that a 'dull preacher' is a contradiction in terms; if he is dull he is not a preacher. He may stand in a pulpit and talk, but he is certainly not a preacher." ~ Martyn Lloyd-Jones

“He preaches well that lives well.” ~ Miguel de Cervantes

D. Martin LLoyd-Jones once said, in a message about preaching, "I fear that I have only really preached twice in my life. And on one of those occasions, I was dreaming." Of course the crowd of preachers he was speaking to, roared with laughter.

Max Lucado said, "The greatest sin of a Christian communicator, is to bore someone with the good news of Jesus Christ." I agree.

"In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage?with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry." -The Apostle Paul, 2 Tim 4:1-5

"The real sermon is made in the closet. The man ? God?s man ? is made in the closet. His life and his profoundest convictions were born in his secret communion with God. The burdened and tearful agony of his spirit, his weightiest and sweetest messages were got when alone with God. Prayer makes the man; prayer makes the preacher; prayer makes the pastor. . . . Prayer is with the pulpit too often only official ? a performance for the routine of service. . . .Every preacher who does not make prayer a mighty factor in his own life and ministry is weak as a factor in God?s work and is powerless to project God?s cause in this world." E.M Bounds

I don't remember who said it, but it has always stuck with me...A young preacher told a old preacher one time, "When I preach and give the invitation, no one comes down." The old preacher asked, "Did you expect them to?" The young preacher replied, "No, not really." The old preacher said, "Then that is why!" We should always expect God's word to move people, we are just the instrument He uses. His word never comes back void!!

Ignores pride? Not hardly. Pride is the ultimate sin that un-repented of will surely bring the kind of attention from God you haven't prayed for.
