Sometimes the idols of our heart are so well hidden that it takes an extraordinary intervention by our loving Savior in order to reveal what is truly ruling and directing our lives. This was certainly the case with the Rich Young Ruler. Although externally, he was deeply devoted to the Jewish religion, internally he was riddled with idolatry by the vain allure of wealth. So blind to his sin was he that Jesus referred to his salvation as 'impossible' by all human efforts, but nevertheless, fully possible for the sinner-saving God. As it was with this young man, so also it is with us. Even if our hearts are not drawn away to wealth, they are no doubt drawn after many other ungodly temptations and sins which so entangle our feet that we can harbor no hope of cutting ourselves free. Instead, like the Rich Young Ruler, we must look to God by faith alone, trusting in his power to save us from our sin, and forsaking all vain confidence that we could ever overcome the snares of sin on our own.
