BREATHING IN THROUGH A GENTLE ANSWER

On every trip they take, frequent fliers hear these words from the flight attendant: “In an emergency, please make sure your oxygen mask is in place before assisting your child with their mask.”

Have you ever wondered why this instruction is given? Because if you can’t breathe, you can’t help your child, and before you know it, neither of you is breathing. The same is true with our emotions as fathers and the emotions of our children. If we cannot control our anger or other emotions, we certainly can’t expect our children to be self-controlled...

Throughout the Bible, it is assumed that anger is a part of life, and that there is an appropriate response to it. It is very rare, however, that anger or aggression is a correct response in the family.

The Bible describes a better way. Remember Proverbs 15:1, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Dad, ask yourself: “Am I answering my children with gentle words no matter what they’ve done, no matter how much they talk back or criticize or resist me?” A gentle answer turns away wrath. Our kids are watching...and learning.
