At the Royal Palace of Tehran in Iran, you can see one of the most beautiful mosaic works in the world. The ceilings and walls flash like diamonds in multifaceted reflections.

Originally when the palace was designed, the architect specified huge sheets of mirrors be placed on the walls. When the first shipment arrived from Paris, they found to their horror that the mirrors were shattered. They were unusable, these broken pieces of once beautiful reflective mirrors now lay in waste in the packing crates that they had arrived in. The contractor threw them in the trash with the pain in his heart that all this money was spent in vain and these once beautiful mirrors were now gone forever. He then brought the sad news to the architect explaining the tragedy that had happened.

Amazingly, the architect did not feel that all was lost, and to everyone’s surprise he ordered all the broken pieces to be collected, then he smashed them into tiny pieces and with tender loving care he began to glue these small broken shards of glass to the walls to become a mosaic of silvery, shimmering, mirrored bits of glass.
