In the thriller novel No Second Chance, by Harlan Coben, one of the characters, Stephen Becard, is thinking of his life and choices he has made. Talking to himself, he says: "You slip-slide into evil. You cross the line for just one moment. You cross back. You feel safe, you’ve changed things, you believe, for the better. The line is still there. It is still intact. OK, maybe there’s a smudge there now. l But you can still see the line clearly. Maybe the next time you cross, the line becomes a little more smudged, but you have your bearings. No matter what happens to that line, you know where it is -- don’t you?
