Crime Doesn’t Pay: For the 7th consecutive year, the number of dishonest employees apprehended — and the dollars recovered from those apprehensions — increased over the previous year, according to the 13th annual Retail Theft Survey. The 30 U.S. retail companies responding to the survey lost more than $4 billion to shoplifting and employee theft in ‘00. Participant’s apprehended 73,326 dishonest employees in ‘00, a 10.1% increase over ‘99. Of more than 1.9 million employees 1 in every 22.4 employees was apprehended for theft from their employer. On average, dishonest employees steal about 6.7 times the amount stolen by shoplifters — $765.41 compared to $114.07. (Chain Store Age Weekly Recap 6/1/01)
