Homeschoolers Excel: A study by the Fraser Institute, an independent public policy organization based in British Columbia, found that the average child educated at home participates in a wide range of activities with other children outside the family and that 98% are involved in two or more extracurricular activities per week, such as field trips, music lessons, sports and dance participation, and reading groups. The study also found that home-schooled children regularly outperform other students academically, scoring at the 80th percentile in reading, the 76th percentile in languages, and the 79th percentile in mathematics. Private school students ranged from the 65th to 75th percentiles, while public school students scored at the 50th percentile. Home-schoolers also surpass the national average on standard college entrance exams., “Almost 25% of home-schooled students perform one or more grades above their age level peers in public and private schools,” said Patrick Basham, senior fellow at the Cato Institute and author of the study.
