La joven trajo el bebé al cuarto de la madre para que lo amamantara, pero cuando Susana Wesley, media dormida, acercó el niño a su pecho, encontró que estaba muerto. Se compuso lo mejor que pudo, y durante el día lo enterró.
Diez de sus 19 niños murieron antes de tener dos años, cinco en solo cuatro años, y una de sus hijas era deformada.
Muchas noches, grupos de gente malintencionada rodeaban la casa, golpeando tambores, disparando armas de fuego en el aire, y tirando piedras a la casa. La congregación local rehu-só pagar el sueldo (su esposo era pastor). Él intentó cultivar su tierra para suplementar los in-gresos de la familia, pero sus graneros misteriosamente se incendiaron y su intento fracasó. Miembros de su propia congregación lo mandaron arrestar y lo enviaron a la prisión de los deudores, dejando a Susana y los niños con solo 30 chelines. Mientras ella esperaba su puesta en libertad, alguien encendió su huerta y cortó los odres de sus vacas. Ella tenía que rogar por leche y pan.
