Judson Cornwall was a prominent teacher in the charismatic renewal in the sixties, seventies and eighties. He said a major facet of Israelite worship was gift giving. Three times God discussed the compulsory feast that His covenant people were to attend and all three times He commanded that they should not appear before the Lord empty.

No worshiper could approach God with empty hands because Old Testament worship involved sacrifices, gifts and offerings. No gift, no worship.

God made no provision for free-loaders in His economy. They could, if forced by poverty, trap a sparrow or bring a turtle dove, but they could not worship empty-handed.
