Confusing Beliefs: Although a statement passed by the Presbyterian Church (USA) 2001 General Assembly affirmed salvation through Jesus, recent survey results from the denomination reveal some puzzling beliefs among its clergy and laity. The survey found that at least 70% of members, elders and clergy of the denomination agreed when asked if they believed the “absolute truth for humankind is in Jesus Christ.” But when these same groups were asked whether salvation through Jesus Christ was the only way to heaven, the agreement rate fell dramatically. In fact, only 43% of members, 50% of elders, 39% of pastors and 24% of other clergy said they could agree, “Only followers of Jesus Christ can be saved.” (PWB 6/27/03)
