Meister Eckhart at the end of the 13th century and early years of the 14th said, “No man ever wanted anything so much as God wants to make the soul aware of him. God is ever ready, but we are so unready. God is in, we are out; God is at home, we are strangers.”

He continued, “So necessary is our friendship to God that he approaches us and asks us to be his friends.”

Two men please God—the one who serves God with all his heart because he knows God, and the one who seeks God with all his heart because he knows him not.
