By the time of Christ, crucifixion had become the favorite method of execution throughout the Roman Empire. Also by the time of Christ, Rome had already crucified more than 30,000 victims in and around Jerusalem. So crosses with dead or dying men hanging on them were a common site around Jerusalem And a constant reminder of Roman brutality. It was an emblem of suffering and shame.
