Israel demanded a king and rejected God as their king. God made a new covenant with King David. In David’s offspring a king would rule forever. Israel rejected God but they did not thwart his sovereign purposes for man. In Jesus Christ both the Sinai covenant and David’s covenant are fulfilled.
It is tragic when we give something more priority than we give God. Sporting events can develop character and teach young people positive lessons but if that sport ever came between that person and God, it is wrong. There was great initial acclaim for King Saul. His kingship was dramatically renewed at Gilgal. Now we come abruptly to the end of King Saul’s glory days. As a result of Saul failing the test the dynasty will pass from his family.

This particular study of the life of Saul shows Saul at his best. A humble and decisive leader who is willing to give God the glory. After Saul has been anointed king and given kingship publicly, we find him out attending his fathers fields. He comes back to discover a national crisis.

The story of King Saul’s utter demise unfolds in 1 Samuel 15. The man who stood head and shoulders above all the people is imploding like a skyscraper building with the walls blown out.
The bigger they are the harder they fall. It is dramatic to see a skyscraper building brought to the ground. Dynamite blows out the walls and the building collapses to the ground. Saul brought on his own destruction. Saul became a person who feared man instead of fearing God. Every leader needs to know that no matter what height they obtain that their position is from God, and they never are above keeping God’s law.
