2. The Peace Of Faith

What is it that makes these verses so forceful? To me it is the courageous way in which Habakkuk faces possible calamities & triumphs over them through knowledge & faith in his Savior. Habakkuk has learned the lesson of faith taught in 2:4

Though the prophet was asking questions as complaining man so often does, & maybe not even expecting an answer, God responds. The Lord is not indifferent or insensitive. He is concerned about the affairs of earth & especially the conduct of His people.

After acknowledging God’s ultimate justice the prophet humbly asked in worship the hard issue of how the wicked could be used to punish those less evil than themselves (CIT). He said this apparent moral contradiction needed further clarification from God

Those that have faith in God live right & do right. The proud do what is right in their own might. Pride & might did not make Israel right or justified & would not justify the Babylonians either. Faith in God justifies us.

The sentence of judgement against Babylon for their character of pride & their action of all-consuming greed is clearly stated. Here we have God giving voice to all the victims of injustices in a taunt song against their oppressors.

God’s abiding intent is that His glory should fill the whole earth as it has filled His house (2:14) & that man should know His glory fully. For this to occur the false knowledge the Babylonian character & aspirations epitomize must be removed.

Habakkuk’s prayer is a pinnacle of praise. It is the mountain top destination of a journey that began in the valley of distress & doubt. It is for God’s power & involvement in the world.

Habakkuk could face an uncertain future in submissive confidence in God because in the midst of past difficulties & judgments God had brought about deliverance for His people. He trusted God would use whatever the future judgment held to bring about salva

As Habakkuk accepts God’s righteous judgment he finds the incredible grace gift of faith that causes him to rejoice & rise to new places of faith & strength. In accepting the fearful, challenging Word of God, he found grace to soar above circumstances
