“Do you know what God wants?” He wants to be believed. I could have learned that lesson earlier if I had paid attention to the response of the Ninevites to Jonah’s preaching.

2. Fleeing From God

To escape the presence of God is not rational thinking, certainly for a prophet of God. But how many of us are rational when we reject God’s commands and escape his attention? And that leads us to consider how much Jonah is like us.

5. God's Mercy

This message helps us to understand and to feel how troubling the mercy of God can really be. For if we do not have such understanding, we will take too lightly the mercy we are to possess and the mercy that has been shown to us.

One thing evident about the story of Jonah is that his assignment to Nineveh was not so much about what Nineveh needed to learn as what Jonah needed to learn; so it is with us.
