Summary: God wants certain attitudes in our lives and the best attitudes that we can have are from the Beattitudes. This is part 2 of a 4 part teaching on the 9 Beattitudes that Jesus gave us.

#3. Matthew 5:5 (NKJV) “Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.”

Attitude 3 - We need an attitude of being TEACHABILITY.

Meekness is not weakness

Most people seem to think that meek means weak, a spineless person without any backbone at all.

But the word “meek” is used in bridling a horse, or taming a wild animal.

The word “meek” is “power under control.” So when we talk about a meek person, we’re talking about one whose life has been brought under the influence of the Holy Spirit, and God is in control of his or her life.

What this Beatitude tells me is that I am to drive my life, but allow God to be my navigator.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. 4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

The meek are sensitive to the divine will of God.

Matthew 11:29 (KJV)“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart.”

Jesus was meek, and look what he did to the money changers in the Temple. He made a whip out of cords, and drove all of the money changers from the temple. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

John 2:13-16 (NKJV) Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise!”

Ephesians 4:26 (NKJV) “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

Meekness is self control empowered by the HOLY SPIRIT.

We need to be sensitive to the will of God and the power of the Holy Spirit.

We don’t need to cower like a mouse, but roar like a lion.

We also need an attitude of allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us as we deal with those around us.

Proverbs 28:1 (NKJV) The wicked flee when no one pursues, But the righteous are bold as a lion.

And remember if we do this, we will inherit the earth

#4. Matthew 5:6 (NKJV) “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.”

Attitude 4 - We need an attitude of Hungering After God the Righteous one and the things of God.

We need to have a Hunger for God the Righteous one and the things of God. God is righteous and we need to have the same desires that He has.

We need to have a burning desire for Him. Our driving passion – our driving hunger – needs to be on those things that are pleasing to God.

The world doesn't have this.

Isaiah 5:20 (NKJV) Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Look at the Psalmist Hunger for God and God alone. When we hunger like this, everything else comes in line. We will be filled.

Psalm 42:1 As the deer pants for the water brooks,

So pants my soul for You, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

Psalms 63:1 (NKJV) O God, You are my God;

Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You;

My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land

Where there is no water.

Psalms 27:4-6 (NKJV) One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.

5 For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle

He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.
