Summary: The enemy loves to stir up and cause chaos in an attempt to get us off track. Imagine the chaos at the trial of Jesus.

“Chaos” = complete disorder and confusion

Synonyms – disorganization, mayhem, pandemonium, havoc, turmoil, commotion, disruption, mess, lawlessness

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 1 John 3:4

The enemy delights in bringing chaos and confusion to our lives. Our God does things decently and in order; the chaotic mess that takes place in lives is quite often brought on by lawlessness and wrecklessness which is sin.

HERE IS WHERE JOHN’S ACCOUNT OF THE ARREST AND TRIAL OF JESUS COME IN. CONSIDER THE AMOUNT OF CHAOS THAT HAD BEEN STIRRED UP AT THIS TIME AS A RESULT OF THE SINS OF THE WORLD BEING ACCOUNTED FOR BY THIS ONE MAN – JESUS.

1. In the midst of chaos, religion becomes apparent.

n Verse 28 – To avoid ceremonial/religious uncleanness, the Jews didn’t lead Jesus into the palace. They wanted to be able to eat the Passover.

n Their accusations about Jesus were vague. Their real issue was that He didn’t fit within their parameters of belief/religion.

n The religion of today is cultural relativism. If it works for you then it is fine. There are no absolutes. The more chaotic things become, the more vague that line becomes.

2. In the midst of chaos, it becomes hard to receive truth.

n Verse 38 – Pilate has been speaking to Jesus and asks Him, “What is truth?”

n The voices of the crowd and the sounds of chaos prevented Pilate from being able to receive or believe the truth.

n When the lie and the chaos is so loud, it is hard for people to hear the truth.

n In society today, the lies of the enemy have been sounded so loudly and chaos had ensued to such an extent that the truth of God and His Word are barely audible at all.

3. In the midst of chaos, the crowd becomes lustful and impatient.

n Pilate offers to release Jesus and the crowd insists on having Barabbas released instead who was truly guilty of a crime.

n The flogging and beating that Pilate ordered for Jesus was not enough for the people.

n The mayhem had reached a fever pitch and the crowd was not going to be satisfied until they had what they demanded.

n The mob was totally wrong in what they were asking for. However, they were big, loud and intimidating and they got their way.

4. In the midst of chaos, it is tough for people to stand for what is right.

n Pilate wished to release Jesus and even tried on more than one occasion, but the voice of the crowd and the sound of chaos was far too loud for him.

n Pilate got caught up in the moment and realized that he could jeopardize his position and status if he didn’t follow the chaos of the crowd.

n For Pilate, selfish ambition became more important than his true feelings or instincts.

n It has often been said that the only thing needed for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing.

n The closer we get to the end the more difficult this will become.

5. In the midst of chaos, God is still in control.

n Jesus tells Pilate that he would have no power over Him unless it had been given to him from above.

His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endured from generation to generation. All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: “What have you done?” Daniel 4:34-35

n Everything is Father-filtered. There is nothing we go through that God isn’t in control of.

n Even when it seems as though all around you is a mess and you can’t seem to find your way out or through, God is right there in control and will never allow us to go through more than we can endure.

n God the Father laid the sin of the world on His Son, Jesus, because He knew that Jesus could endure it. He knew His Son could handle it. God trusted Jesus.
