"Why Are There So Many Songs About Rainbows?" Series

Genesis 9:1-17

This morning I want to open with the words of one of the great philosophers of our age - Kermit the Frog

Kermit: Why are there so many songs about rainbows

And what’s on the other side?

Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,

And rainbows have nothing to hide.

So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it

I know they’re wrong, wait and see.

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,

The lovers, the dreamers and me.

What is it about rainbows? Why are they such an attraction to us? What is the fascination that draws man to the rainbow?

1. God establishes the new order after the flood 9:1-7

a. God begins the new order by blessing Noah like he had Adam. 9:1-4

verse 1 - be fruitful and multiply - see also verse 7

verse 2-3 - dominion over the animal kingdom

verse 4 - no eating meat with blood

b. God determines the value of human life 9:5-6

2. God establishes a covenant with mankind 9:8-17

a. The covenant 9:8-13

b. The sign of the covenant 9:14-17

Every time you see a rainbow it is a sign of the covenant God has made with mankind that he will never again destroy the world by a flood.

NIV 1 Corinthians 11:25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."
