If you want to hear God’s voice and know what He would have you to do then you will want to notice the four things Peter did in this passage and do them yourself.

You should…

1. REFLECT on God’s word – v.17

Peter was meditating on what God had communicated to him in the vision. God has communicated to us as well. It is written down for all to see. Only when we meditate / reflect on His word can we expect to hear and understand what He is saying to us through it.

2. RESPECT God’s word – v. 20

Peter was told not to doubt anything. We too must not doubt what God has said. We must believe it completely not doubting anything. When we doubt what God has said we are calling His very nature into question and cannot expect to hear anything from Him.

3. RECOGNIZE God’s word – v. 22

Peter was not the only one whom God had spoken to. He also spoke to Cornelius. We must recognize that there may be those around us who are listening to what God is saying and He may choose to communicate through them as well. Of course if he does it will always agree with what His word already says.

4. RESPOND to God’s word – v. 23

Peter responded with action and obedience. When we recognize God speaking to us it is a call to action and obedience. We must act on it without hesitation.

You know, in retrospect it seems pretty clear that the hearing part is not that difficult. The obedience is the part that requires some commitment. Have you heard God speak recently, perhaps even this morning? If so, will you be obedient and respond in action to His instruction?
