Summary: A sermon about how we can't be good without God.

FACTS ABOUT FUDGE

The Northwest Fudge Factory in Ontario, Canada, created a slab of fudge that weighed 2,002 lbs, making it the record-holding largest slab of fudge. The chocolate-and-vanilla-swirl fudge measured 166 ft. long, 9 in. wide and 3 in. high. The fudge took a total of 86 hours to prepare and 13 individuals to pour it into shape.

Then, in 1887, the first fudge store, Murdick’s Candy Kitchen opened in Mackinac Island, Michigan. Murdick’s was the first store to use marble slabs which gave their fudge a unique taste. To this day, Murdick’s uses the same recipe they used in 1887. They boil all natural ingredients (including cream and sugar) in a copper pot and then pour the mixture on a marble table, where the fudge is shaped and hand sliced into a creamy confection. The whole process takes about 35 minutes.

"I AM GOOD"

What does that mean…?

I am not bad.. Most of the time.

I am good compared to others…

I am good I don’t need what you have

I am good… I have had enough

I am good I don’t need to think spiritually

What I do good outweighs the bad.

So how good are we?

Every moon has a dark side… what is yours? Feel guilt for it? Who knows.

Romans 3:10-12: As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.”

Really I am not good… no one.. How can that be?

When I do good is it selfish? When I am nice is it selfish

Am I always selfish? Etc.

Romans 3:13: Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with lies.

Ouch.. I don’t lie? Do I?

When Is the last time?

Ok fishing… lol

Ok taxes.

Ok spouse boyfriend/girlfriend.

Ok boss

Ok sick day

Ok last invitation. Ok

Hold it—is someone listening to what I am saying and keeping track?

Romans 3:13-14: Snake venom drips from their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.

Ok how many here are holding a grudge.

I would never do that

I would never be bitter—would I?

Romans 3:15-16: “They rush to commit murder. Destruction and misery always follow them.

My mistakes have hurt others… life creates misery for someone else.

Ever felt bad for your decision that hurt someone else.

Like last person you fired

The truth you told to someone.

The words that hurt someone

Or worse your actions that caused someone else pain. Today they still are hurting.

Romans 3:17-18: “They don’t know where to find peace. They have no fear of God at all.”

To respect is to fear. My life does not reflect this

I fear my boss

I fear my wife/husband

I fear my kids

I fear my friends

I fear my co-workers

I fear everything but, God

Romans 3:19: Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

The law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, (our conscience) and to show that the entire world is guilty before God.

I want to blame others

I want to blame hypocrites

I want to blame my last pastor/ this pastor

I want to blame my childhood

I want to blame my addictions

I want to blame my work… too busy

I want to blame it on money

I want to blame my marriage

Romans 3:20: For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.

Guilt is hard to get rid of… so we work hard hoping to rid ourselves.

Do good, but don’t count on it.

Do good, but realize it is not an eraser.

Do good, but realize it can’t make up for sin.

Romans 3:21-22: But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

Believe in him not you… his ability not yours

Faith in him means you choose to follow.

Faith in him means you let go of the past

Faith in him means you admit… I am not good

Romans 3:23-24: For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.
