INTRODUCTION
The Beatitudes exhibit the natural progression of the transformation that comes only through Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Those who seek this transformation are "blessed" or "approved of God." True happiness in life comes when one receives God’s approval.
First in our series, we looked at the "poor in Spirit." The poor in Spirit are those who realize their "spiritual bankruptcy" and that they are totally dependent upon God.
Second, we looked at "spiritual mourning." Spiritual mourning is the natural response to poorness of Spirit as one realizes the ramifications of their sin.
Today we look at the next step of Christian transformation.
"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." (Matthew 5:5)
MAIN BODY
I. Meekness is NOT
A. Being meek does not mean being weak.
B. Being meek does not mean you never get angry.
C. Being meek does not mean you become a doormat to be walked over.
D. Holman Bible Dictionary: "Meekness does not refer to weakness or passivity but to controlled power."
II. Meekness IS
A. Aristotle: "Meekness is the middle between excessive anger and excessive lack of anger."
B. "Blessed is the man who is angry at the right time and never angry at the wrong time." (According to Aristotle’s definition)
C. The Greeks used this word for an animal that had been trained to obey its master.
D. "Blessed is the man who has every instinct, impulse and passion under control."
E. Matthew 11:28—29
III. Inherit the Earth
A. God takes care of His own! When you turn you life over to God an allow him to take control then you truly realize the fullness of his blessings.
B. "You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought." (Matthew 5:5 TMNT)
