Summary: What Does the Bible Say About Discipleship?

JOHN 8:31-32

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

1 JOHN 2:3-6

And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

JOHN 12:26

If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

LUKE 9:23

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

MATTHEW 4:19

And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Takeaway:

Being a disciple is following after the life and example of Jesus by living, serving and loving just as he has done. Disciples are changed by the work and person of Christ.
