The Humanity and Divinity of Christ

December 20, 2020

• Have you ever wondered why God chose to send Jesus to the earth the way He did?

• His humanity and divinity have been misunderstood and debated for centuries.

His humanity was only an illusion.

Jesus was part God and part human.

Jesus was fully human and fully divine.

Why is that important to us today? Jesus was completely human because:

1. He was born from a woman.

Luke 2:6-7 NIV

“While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

2. He grew up like other children.

Luke 2:51-52 NIV

“And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”

• He had a human mind. He was not a “baby genius” ?

3. He became tired, hungry and thirsty.

Matthew 4:2 NIV

“After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.”

4. He had a human soul and emotions.

John 11:35 NIV

“Jesus wept.”

• These were real emotions, not fake ones. That’s why we have permission as believers to be authentic with our own emotions. Jesus did not wear a church mask, and neither should we.

5. He died.

Luke 23:46 NIV

“Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last.”

Why is it important to us that Jesus was fully human?

1. Jesus is our substitute.

Romans 5:18-19 NIV

“Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.”

Jesus obeyed where Adam failed. He obeys in our place.

• Jesus had to be fully human and die a human death to pay the penalty for our sin.

Jesus represents us to God and God to us.

2. Jesus is our example.

1 John 2:6 NIV

“Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.”

3. Jesus is our sympathetic High Priest.

Hebrews 4:15 NIV

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin.”

• When you’re weeping at the loss of a loved one, Jesus has been there.

• When you’re battling death and praying for your life, Jesus has been there.

• When you’re the victim of hurt, pain, abuse, Jesus has been there.

• When you’re watching family and friends self-destruct, Jesus has been there.
