WALKING IN CORRECTNESS

CONCERNING GOD THE FATHER)

1 John 4:7-21

In our last study we identified many things concerning the Holy Spirit and gave some proofs of why we worship the one true God. In this study we are going to be reminded of some very simple but important truths concerning God.

What God Is

In John’s writings we are given three expressions that help us understand what God is and what He does.

John 4:24

God the Father is spirit. He is not flesh and blood. By being spirit, God is not limited by time and space the way His creatures are.

John 3:18-21

God is light. This refers to His holy nature.

1 John 4:7-8

God is love. Because God is love and God is light His love is a holy love and His holiness is expressed in love.

What God Did

1 John 4:9-11

Because God is love, He must communicate that in words and in action. God has revealed His love to mankind many times in many different ways. He revealed His love in creation. He revealed His love to Israel. But out of all of the times God has revealed His love to us, the greatest revelation of His love is through the death of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

What God Is Doing

1 John 4:12-16

Not only has God done something for us through the death of Jesus, but when we make Jesus our Savior, God does something in us.

When Jesus becomes our Savior we are born again. We are given a new life, a life with God at the center. When we live our lives in a way that God is at the center, the result of that will be us living in love. Showing love to others is the outward evidence of the Holy Spirit within us.

1 John 4:17-21

As God’s children we can have confidence and a hope that we know that through God we have the victory. We do not fear death. We do not fear what others will do to us. We do not fear because no matter what people do to us they can never take our salvation.
