Summary: A beautiful picture of the church as the Bride of Christ.

A Bride for the Bridegroom

Gen 24:1-4

24:1 Abraham was now old and well advanced in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way. 2 He said to the chief servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, "Put your hand under my thigh. 3 I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, 4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac."

The remaining verses in chapter 24 deal with the servant going to find a bride for Isaac. It is a wonderful story as you read how Rebekah is prayed for, located and taken to meet Isaac.

In this story of Abraham obtaining a bride for his son Isaac, we see a picture of God obtaining a suitable bride for His Son – Jesus.

I. Abraham is a type of a king making ready the wedding for his son (Mt. 22.2)(Rev. 19.7)

II. The unnamed servant is a type of the Holy Spirit (Jn. 16.13-14)

III. Rebekah is a type of the Church (2 Cor. 11.2)(Eph. 5.25)

IV. Isaac is a type of the Bridegroom (1 Thess. 4.14-18)

Matt 22:1-3

22:1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2 "The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.

Rev 19:7

7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.

NIV

2 Cor 11:2

2 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.

NIV

Eph 5:25-27

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

NIV

1 Thess 4:14-18

14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

NIV

God is still working on the Bride for the Bridegroom. The Holy Spirit is still seeking out the “whosoevers”. The Bridegroom is coming to take His Bride to the great wedding feast.
