A DISCIPLE BREAKS BREAD
Introduction:
Part of being a disciple of Jesus is your relationships with others. When we began this series, we looked at 3 things a disciple does- A disciple of Jesus touches lepers, befriends prostitutes, and offends Pharisees. All of these things are relational. We also looked at disciples of Jesus fishing for people; and disciples of Jesus washing feet- These are also about relationships. We are going to finish this series by looking at how disciples of Jesus break bread.
These followers of Jesus met in 2 different places- The Temple courts, (which was public); and in their homes. I want us to notice a couple of key thoughts about breaking bread.
Breaking bread…
1. Demands extreme commitment.
Peter had just preached about the resurrection of Jesus and 3,000 people were saved in 1 day. What did these new believers do? They devoted themselves. They were completely devoted to the Apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. Why do we meet together as a Congregation? I was thinking about how Jesus tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves; and most people now days do not even know their neighbors. Technology has taught us how to avoid people and relationships. Jesus tells us that everything revolves around love.
I looked up some phrases in the Bible that use the words “one another”. (This is just a few. There are many more.)
“Be devoted to one another…” (Romans 2:10a)
“Honor one another…” (Romans 12:10b)
“Accept one another…” (Romans 15:7)
“Serve one another in love.” (Galatians 5:13)
“Be compassionate to one another.” (Ephesians 4:32)
“Submit to one another…” (Ephesians 5:21)
“Encourage one another…” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
“Spur one another on toward love…” (Hebrews 10:24)
“Live in harmony with one another…” (1 Peter 3:8)
“Offer hospitality to one another…” (1 Peter 4:9)
Breaking bread…
2. Produces extreme results.
These people’s lives were transformed. People were being healed. People gave all they had in order to help others. They met together in the Temple courts every day. They met together in their homes every day. The greatest result was- People were being saved every day.
