A Higher View of God

Revelation 4:8-11

John Shearhart

November 6, 2011

I’ve been asking you a question for several weeks, and I think you’ve just about got it. Let’s see: “What does our church need?”

[Answer: “A higher view of God.”]

Now why would I say we need a higher view of God? Let me give you a couple answers. First, we need a higher view of God because He deserves to be lifted higher and higher.

When have you said enough about an infinite God? What if NASA got on TV today and said, “Well, we pretty much know everything there is to know about space, so we’re going to do something else.” What? How can they ever know everything about space? It’s got to be infinite; there is no end to it! And if there is an end, I’d like to know what it looks like and what’s on the other side of that. But the infinite universe is God’s creation which He spoke into existence! How much more infinite is He? When can we say enough? How can we know enough? If I come to the pulpit every week with nothing more than the attributes of God I could go my entire life and not even make it “to the moon.”

Let me give you an example from Scripture. Look at the four beasts around the throne in Revelation 4:8

And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Now just think about that for a minute. The day you die you’ll be taken into the presence of God and there you’ll see and hear these four beasts worshiping Him:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Day and night without ever stopping. No breaks. No time off. Just constantly praising, “holy, holy, holy.” Think! These four stay on square one. During this time they don’t talk about His love or His grace. They don’t talk about the incarnation or Calvary. They just stay right here on three points: “God is holy, powerful, and eternal. God is holy, powerful, and eternal. God is holy, powerful, and eternal.” Imagine if you came next week and that’s all we did for the whole hour! You come in and sit down and we just start repeating the same phrase over and over and over again in worship. No music. No preaching. No specials: just praising God for being holy, powerful, and eternal.

Some folks hear that and they say, “Oh, how boring. I want church to be meaningful. I want to learn and have variety. I want heaven to be a place where I can fish and hunt and golf and do all the things I love to do here.”

But did you ever stop to think that our meetings and heaven are about more than your blissful pleasure? You see? You need a higher view of God! These four beasts have laid eyes on Him. They see Him as He is and they have no desire to leave His presence. They’re not checking their watches or counting down to when they can stop saying the same thing. There’s nothing at all in creation that could drag them away and rob them of the opportunity to praise their God!
