Summary: Why did Yashua choose the Wedding at Cana as his first miracle?

Why the Wedding at Canaan?

Why did Jesus choose the Wedding at Cana to be the beginning of his ministry?

John 2:1-11

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus mother said to him, “ they have no more wine.” Dear woman why do you involve me?” Jesus replied, “my time has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from 20, to 30 gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “fill the jars with water;” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take to the master of the banquet.” they did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, thou the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guest have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” This, the first of his miraculous sighs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee.

I have heard this story of the “wedding at Cana” preached many times over the years. I’ve heard it preached with emphasis on Mary, on the bride, and groom, and on the miracle itself. I really thought I had heard it preached every way there was to preach it. But not long ago the Holy Spirit began to bring this story to my mind repeatedly. And of course I realized the Lord wanted me to begin to research this story as a sermon.

As I have said many times before “ Everything in the Bible is there for a reason.” The God who constructed this complex mathematical DNA structure that we call life, is the same God who created this caldron of Gases, and Matter we live on and in, that we call Earth, and Universe. Now it would appear to me absolutely absurd to think that a Creator would place man in the middle of all this and then fail to give him instructions as to how to function in this creation.. Well he did. It is the Bible. The undisputed Word of God to those that believe. I, for one, am continually amazed how people can believe God created this complex world, and then believe this biblical roadmap is somehow just a mishmash of words. It only appears to be that way if you don’t have the keys of understanding. I believe the Bible is a very complex document. So complex we have only scratched the surface of understanding. Man is so foolish to believe just because he don’t understand it, it must be gibberish. I believe God constructed the bible in such a way that it resembles a complex set of locks. They will only open one at a time, and they are preset to only open at particular times in history, But in order to open them you have to have the secret keys. Those keys are Prayer, and Faith. When you begin to use these keys in conjunction with the study of His Word, The book begins to reveal itself to you.

A few years ago Nicolas Cage made a movie called “National Treasure.” It was a movie about a secret message embedded in the declaration of independence. The fictional story was about the “all seeing eye” found on the back of a dollar bill. It was put there by the founding fathers as a means of communicating a secret about a hidden treasure. Throughout the movie the clues unfolded one by one until you knew the secret. I remember when I was watching it, I was thinking how much it reminded me of the mystery of the word of God. If only we could communicate the excitement of this great document to others. The most exciting suspense movie ever made pales in comparison. The difference being of course, the Bible is REAL! Every story Jesus told or lived out during his life happened at a precise time, in a precise manner, for a precise reason. It is all part of a divine structured plan of God. The Wedding at Cana is no different. It was preordained to be his first miracle. It is filled with secrets you are about to have revealed to you.

ON THE THIRD DAY A WEDDING TOOK PLACE AT CANA.

Why on the third day?

Here is where some people get it wrong. They think the writer is telling us that a wedding took place on the third day after Yeshua was baptized. Because the book of John does not describe the 40 days in the wilderness that followed his baptism. This is not what it means. The third day is in reference to the Sabbath. The first day would be Sunday, the second Monday, and so on. Tuesday is always the third day. Tuesday is also the day chosen for weddings. The Jews chose the third day because it was the only day in the 6 days of creation that God saw his work and said it was good ‘twice‘. So it is believed in Jewish tradition that Tuesday, the third day has a special blessing. This is the reason the groom, and bride of Cana chose the third day. Even today Jewish weddings often occur on the third day.
