Summary: Basic sermon on ABC’s of salvation preached at a VBS rally

ABC’s for Parents

Many people today say that they are Christians, but have never established a relationship with Jesus through faith and repentance.

This week we learned the ABC’s of becoming a follower of Jesus Christ, and receiving the free gift of salvation.

I. Admit to God you are a sinner and repent, and turn to God

a. God doesn’t want us to try to justify ourselves when we do wrong

i. He wants us to go to Him for forgiveness

ii. It is impossible to ask forgiveness when you will never admit to sin

b. Many of us think that God will grade us on a curve, and our sins are not that important

i. But we forget that God is Perfect and Holy and Just

ii. Because of that, He cannot accept us unless we are perfect, holy and just

iii. Our sin is what separates us from God (Romans 6:23 a “The wages of sin is death…)

c. Some of you may be thinking, I am not perfect – so I guess I’ll always be separated from God

i. But that’s just it, God can make you perfect

ii. He makes you perfect through Jesus –

II. Believe that Jesus is God’s Son and accept the free gift of salvation

a. Because Jesus was perfect, if we believe in Him alone for salvation, we are given the free gift of salvation

i. You cannot earn God’s forgiveness

ii. No matter how many good things you do, it will never pay for even one of your sins

iii. You must accept in faith God’s free gift of salvation (Romans 6:23 b “but the gift of God is eternal life”)

b. Belief is not simply a “head-knowledge”

i. Story: “You don’t really believe in ‘Jonah and the whale’ do you?”

ii. The professor knew the story, but the student believed the story

c. The belief Christ wants is the same belief that a skydiver has in his parachute

i. Christ want us to take a ‘leap of faith’ and put all of our trust in Him

ii. Because Christ is the only way to heaven, we are required to take that leap of faith if we want to go to heaven and be with God

III. Confess your faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord

a. You can confess your faith at anytime

i. You can do it tonight

ii. The Bible says, Romans 10:9-10 “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

And that’s the whole purpose of our VBS – to teach the young people, and adults how to be saved.

Everyone must accept Christ in order to be saved. There will be no exceptions.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the Truth and the Life” and “No one comes to the Father except through Me”
