Summary: This sermon is designed to be helpful to us when we feel all alone.

JOHN 16:19-33

Jesus is in the Upper Room with His Disciples.

This very night, He will be arrested.

The next day, He will be nailed to a cross.

Listen now to His Words to those 12 men!

[19]Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, "Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, 'A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'?

[20] Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

[21] A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.

[22] Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

[23] And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.

[24] Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

[25] "These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.

[26] In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you;

[27] for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.

[28] I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father."

[29] His disciples said to Him, "See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech!

[30] Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God."

[31] Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?

[32] Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.

[33] These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

Have you ever been alone?

Probably you have!

You have experienced that loneliness that overwhelms us

at the death of a loved one.

You've known that loneliness of rejection and betrayal

When a dear friend turns his back on you.

You've experienced loneliness when a close friend moves away.

You have felt alone.

Jesus felt it, too.

Jesus knows all about that.

He experienced loneliness.

He knew the hostile rejection of His enemies.

He knew the inconsistency of so-called friends.

He knew the feeling of being abandoned by God the Father.

This is important because it helps us realize

that He is qualified to sympathize with us in our loneliness.

Let me tell you about an old man, a farmer, George Timmons.

He scrimped and saved and denied himself for many years...

to put his only son, George, Jr. through college.

Finally the boy went away to school at the University of Illinois

The son seldom wrote or phoned...and he never came home.

And his father's loneliness increased every day.

Where do we see Jesus experiencing this loneliness?

Where do we see Him alone?

Mark 14:32-38 Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray." [33] And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. [34] Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch." [35] He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. [36] And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will." [37] Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? [38] Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
