Always Faithful

Selected Passages

Devotional for Perry County Home

November 11, 2001

Introduction

The Marine Corps has an interesting motto, Semper Fidelis, it is Semper Fi for short. We have all seen it on shirts, bumper stickers and various other items but do you know what those two Latin words mean? Semper Fidelis literally means always faithful and it reveals the attitude behind code of conduct of the Marine Corps.

I believe that this same motto can be used to describe God. This morning I want you to know that God is always faithful.

Let’s take a few moments this morning to examine the faithfulness of God.

I. God is Faithful in Character

A. God is consistent

The works of his hands are faithful and just, all his precepts are trustworthy. Psalm 111:7

1. Everything that God does is good

a.) God has promised to bless His people.

b.) He works on their behalf throughout all of their lives

2. Every word that God speaks is true

a.) When God makes a promise he keeps it

b.) When God gives direction it is always correct

c.) When God pronounces His will it is always a blessing

B. God is constant

22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him."

1. God loves with an eternal love

Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed

a.) God’s faithfulness brings protection over His people

b.) God’s faithfulness brings provision to His people

c.) God’s faithfulness brings His presence with His people

2. God cares with a complete compassion

a.) God does not mere sit and watch the unfolding of our lives.

b.) He is active in working in our lives

3. God blesses with a renewing power

a.) God has revealed His faithfulness

1.) He gave Israel manna from heaven

2.) God provided the ram for Abraham’s sacrifice

3.) God gave Israel water from the rock

b.) God’s faithfulness is complete

1.) God brings us new strength for each new day

2.) Every day that we live is a new day for God to bless us

4. God provides with a substantial portion

a.) God supplies our every need

b.) God meets our needs in His time not ours

II. God is Faithful in Covenant

A. The nature of covenant

A covenant is an agreement made between two parties and this creates a special relationship between the parties. Covenants were used as pledges of friendship or business contracts. God has pledged His power and His love to his people through the act of a covenant.

The Bible records God’s covenant with Noah to never destroy the world again by flood. The covenant of God with Abraham to make his lineage a nation. The covenant between God and David to bring the Messiah from his lineage. The covenant between God and all of humanity for eternal life through His Son Jesus.

B. The nature of the creator

1. The LORD is God

This may seem like a redundant statement but we need to remember that LORD stands for Yahweh, the personal name of God. So this verse is proclaiming the God of Israel as the only true God and this is vitally important.

Paganism needed many gods because there are many needs in life. Examples: If you were at war you would need the god of war. If it were harvest time you would need to worship the god of the harvest and so on. God meets every need that we have in life.

2. The LORD is Faithful

God is faithful to his people both now and forever. God has poured out His love, grace and acceptance upon those who would humble themselves and come to Him. God brings blessings into the lives of those who follow Him.
