Summary: Maintaining the victory in the midst of trouble

2 Sam 5:22 And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of

Rephaim.

2 Sam 5:23 And when David inquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a

compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

2 Sam 5:24 And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees,

that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of

the Philistines.

2 Sam 5:25 And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from

Geba until thou come to Gazer.

INTRODUCTION:

David has just been anointed King of Israel and assumed the throne.

He had previously crushed the enemy of Israel, the Philistines (v17-21)

Now he is being challenged again.

The enemy desired to crush the new king in his infancy.

In their haste to destroy Israel they forgot a few things:

In I Sam 5&6 They forgot about the afflictions the had when they captured the Ark.

In I Sam 16:13-14 The Spirit of God rested upon David and left King Saul

In I Sam 17 David was the one who destroyed their Champion

But above everything else they forgot that Israel was God’s chosen people.

I. GOD’S PRESENCE

Isa 55:6 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

Deu 31:6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD

thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Zep 3:17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice

over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye

sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and,

lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Psa 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

II. GOD’S PROMISE

Num 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should

repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it

good?

2 Cor 1:20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory

of God by us.

TYPES OF PROMISES:

PROVISION - GEN 22:14

PROTECTION - ISA 59:19

LIFE - JN 3:16

AN ETERNAL HOME - JN 14:1-3

III. GOD’S POWER

Psa 50:15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt

glorify me.

Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the

city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye

shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto

the uttermost part of the earth.

Zec 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD

unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of

hosts.

Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in

one place.

Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and

it filled all the house where they were sitting.

Acts 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon

each of them.

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other

tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

TO HAVE THE PRESENCE THE PROMISE AND THE POWER OF GOD YOU MUST

PUT YOUR TOTAL TRUST AND DEPENDENCE IN HIM AND NOT IN THE ARM OF

FLESH.

Prov 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own

understanding.

Prov 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Jer 29:12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken

unto you.

Jer 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your

heart.
