Summary: Here's a sermon for April Fools Day which includes a humorous story to illustrate the points.
12 Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs,
Rather than a fool in his folly.
Today is April 1st...April Fools Day!
Everyone has the right to be foolish
but some people abuse the privilege
In the movie Sands of Iwo Jima,
John Wayne's character, Sergeant Stryker, says,
"Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid."
I want to ask you a serious question:
Do you ever do anything that is foolish?
Have you ever done something so foolish that it was painful?
There are times that we do things that are so stupid...
that we inflict pain upon ourselves.
There are also times that we do things that inflict pain on others.
Our foolish moments are painful.
People have been doing foolish things since the dawn of time.
We hit our thumbs with hammers,
shut fingers in doors...
and say things that we will later regret.
When people do foolish things in the Bible,
God does not try to cover it up.
Instead, He reveals the foolish things His people do.
The Bible is filled with some super foolish things
that people did through the Bible times.
There's the story of Adam eating the forbidden fruit
Lot's wife looks back at Sodom and Gomorrah -- pillar of salt
Noah got drunk after the flood
Samson tells Delilah the secret of his strength
David and Bathsheba commit adultery.
Jonah ran from God
Peter denied knowing Jesus three times
Paul tried to reason with the Greek Philosophers
If you search through your Bible,
you are not likely to find the word foolish or stupid.
The Bible is filled with foolish actions
and examples of people being foolish.
Have you ever wondered why people do foolish things?
Today's story is about Harry Jenkins from Akely, Minnesota.
One cold day, Harry and 2 of his friends decided to go ice fishing.
They loaded all their fishing gear into Harry's new pickup.
Now, Harry also had a Labrador Retriever named Jerry.
Harry decided to take the dog with them.
So the three men and Jerry the dog...
headed for nearby Ten Mile Lake
When we look at foolish things we do,
we should seek some advice from wise people.
Solomon was the wisest man to ever live.
Let's look at some of the things he has to say
about foolish decisions or being foolish.
Point #1 No one is immune to foolishness
Proverbs 13:16 Every prudent man acts out of knowledge, but a fool exposes his folly.
Everyone does foolish things from time to time.
There will be moments of genius in your life...
that make you look great in the eyes of other people.
Just remember that those moments of pure genius
will often be ruined by moments of sheer foolishness.
Foolishness is engrained on our human nature.
Paul said that the things he wanted to do...he did not do.
Instead, he did the foolish things over and over again.
The fact that we are human
almost insures that we will do foolish things.
Again and again we are reminded of our foolish choices
and the reality of human ignorance.
As they had hoped,
they found Ten Mile Lake was completely iced over.
Harry drove his new pickup out onto the ice.
After all the ice fishing gear had been unloaded,
it was time to make a hole in the ice.
