Message Point: God has prescribed the way for us to be secure in Him.

Focus Passage: Psalm 37:3-5

Supplemental Passage: Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. (Psalms 20:7 ESV)

Introduction: When Social Security began, the government made this promise: “And finally, beginning in 1949, 12 years from now, you and your employer will each pay 3 cents on each dollar you earn, up to $3,000 a year. That is the most you will ever pay.” Accounting for inflation, this promise equates to a maximum tax collection of $1,655 per person in 2010 dollars. In 2010, the maximum payroll tax collection per person was $13,243 or eight times the promised maximum. In 2011, nearly 55 million Americans will receive $727 billion in Social Security benefits. We are told that unless the “debt ceiling” is raised, the government will run out of money and SS benefit checks are not guaranteed, that’s because, the government started borrowing from the SS Trust Fund ($2.6 trillion) and hasn’t paid it back. We are told that beginning in 2010, SS began operating in a deficit; that is, there is more money going out than coming in. We are told that Social Security will run completely out of money in 2037. However, because the government hasn’t paid back the money from the Trust Fund, Social Security is essentially broke NOW.

I. Trust in the Lord

a. do good; practice faithfulness.

b. Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6 NASB)

c. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4:6 NASB)

II. Delight in the Lord

a. He will give you the desires of your heart:

i. Your desires will be in line with God’s desires, not man’s desires

b. "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33 NASB)

c. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. (Psalms 1:2 NASB)

i. Read the Bible; Pray; Seek after God; attend the gathering of the Saints at every opportunity

III. Commit to the Lord

a. When Jesus said, “Into your hands I commit my spirit” He was saying “I’m putting my soul in your hands”

b. "For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His…" (2 Chronicles 16:9 NASB)

c. And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. (Luke 9:23 NASB)

d. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? (Romans 8:31 NASB)

Invitation: As believers, too many of us trust in things other than God. We listen to Dr. Phil or Oprah for advice instead of seeking the answer in God’s Word. We trust in casinos or even in the government to meet our needs instead of looking to God.
