Summary: This sermon deals with demons and what they believe and yet they will end up in hell.

Believing That Won’t Save You

James 2:17-19

17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

18But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble!

Tomorrow is Halloween.

It’s a time of witches, ghosts, goblins and all kinds of scary things.

They are showing Horror movies on television.

People are going to Haunted Houses.

Kids are going Trick or Treating.

The question is: Do scary things really exist?

Do ghosts really come to haunt us?

I believe in the Holy Ghost, but I don’t believe in ghosts.

However, I know that demons do exist.

Demons can cause some pretty scary things to happen.

Verse 19 is a verse that we ought to seriously consider.

It mentions demons.

It says demons believe and they tremble.

The Bible tells us several places that demons end up in hell.

How can the demons “believe” and still end up in hell?

The demons believe there is a God;

they believe that Jesus is the way to salvation;

but that belief will not save them!

Some of them are already bound in chains in hell!

2 Peter 2:4

For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;

Jude 6

And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;

After the Great Tribulation,

the rest of them will eventually end up there!

What about us?

Can a person who says I believe in Jesus still go to hell?

First, we need to understand who these demons are.

Demons are spirit beings created by God to serve him.

They were originally good angels

who followed Lucifer in his rebellion against God.

They are powerful spirit beings

who now serve Satan and his evil purposes on the earth.

Today, we’re going to answer 3 questions

to help us learn from these demons who believe

and yet still end up in hell.

Question # 1: What Do Demons believe?

First, the demons know the truth about God.

They know there is a God and there is only one God.

The demons are not atheists.

They are not skeptics.

There are no demons who doubt the truth.

James says, “You do well” to believe that God is one.

True faith begins there.

but it doesn’t end there.

What else do the demons believe?

Various encounters with demons in the New Testament

tell is additional things they believe:

They believe in that Jesus is God.

In Mark 3: 11, Jesus meets some demons.

And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, "You are the Son of God."

They know His name and that God the Father sent Him.

Luke 4:34

saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are--the Holy One of God!"

They recognize true preaching of the gospel.

Acts 16:16-17

16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17 This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation."

They recognize false preaching of the gospel.

Acts 19:13-16

Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

They believe in hell as a place of punishment.

Luke 8:29-31

For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness. 30 Jesus asked him, saying, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion," because many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss.
