Summary: Jesus was born in lowly circumstances, yet He was destined for greatness! Using the true story of an actress, this message shows us how God works to bring about great things.

Luke 2:21-38

[21]And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

[22] Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord

[23] (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"),

[24] and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons."

[25] And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

[26] And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

[27] So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law,

[28] he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:

[29] "Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word;

[30] For my eyes have seen Your salvation

[31] Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,

[32] A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel."

[33] And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him.

[34] Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, "Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against

[35] (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

[36] Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity;

[37] and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

[38] And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

On May 31, 1965,

a daughter was born to Frank & Terri Shields of New York.

She was given the named Christa.

Her Father was an executive officer

in the Revlon Cosmetics Company.

Her mother had been a professional model

and was now working in personnel management.

Her Grand Father was a former professional tennis player.

Everyone agreed, Little Christa was a beautiful little baby.

Before she reached the age of 1…

Nearly everyone in America saw the face of this cute baby.

She appeared in an Ivory Snow TV commercial

when she was just 11 months old.

In 1978, at the age of 13…

Christa made her movie debut in Pretty Baby.

Two years later, she starred in The Blue Lagoon.

In 1981, Christa was a hit in the movie Endless Love.

As time went on, Christa’s face was frequently seen

in advertisements for Calvin Klein jeans,

Breck shampoo,

Colgate toothpaste,

and Band Aids.

After college, Christa starred in a string of TV-movies,

before landing the title role in Suddenly Susan in 1996.

Christa’s love life was also open to the public.

Previously linked romantically to Michael Jackson,

Liam Neeson, Prince Albert of Monaco,

John Kennedy, Jr, and Michael Bolton,

Christa eventually married tennis star Andre Agassi.

During her 38 years of life…Christa was:

Chosen as Time magazine’s Face of the ’80s.

Chosen as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world

by People Magazine in 1996 and again in 2000.

Chosen as one of the most intriguing people of the year

by People Magazine in 1978, 1980, and 1996.

Between the years of 1980 and 1985,

she appeared on more than 250 magazine covers.

Who is this Christa?

We know her better as Brooke Shields.

Do you suppose when Brooke Shields was born…

That people could tell she would make a mark in the world?

Did they know that she would become famous!

Well, apparently her mother did.

Brooke’s mom did everything possible

to promote her daughter’s career from birth.

The same questions could be asked about Jesus.

Did anyone suspect that this Baby Jesus

would achieve such greatness?.

We have good reason to believe that our Lord Jesus

received no pampering or pushing as did Brooke Shields.

In fact, our Bible text today suggests

that Jesus’ parents tried to give their son a normal childhood.
