Summary: A sermon detailing the third letter or message from Jesus to the seven church's of Revelation.

“Change”

Revelation 2:12-17

12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write,

‘These things says He who has the sharp two-edged sword:

13 “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.

14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.

15 Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.

16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.

17 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.”’

Message Title...CHANGE...

Pray

For those of you just joining us...

We’ve spent the past couple of weeks...

Camped in the Book of Revelation...

Rather than trudging through the more puzzling prophetic passages...

We’ve been pouring over the more practical pages...

Of John’s Revelation...

Truthfully...We’ve been reading other churches’ mail...

One envelope at a time...

We’ll be unfolding the seven letters...

From the Son of God...To the seven churches...Of Asia...

Although these seven letters weren’t addressed to us...

They do address the cares...Concerns...And crises...

Faced by ours...And countless other churches...

Throughout the centuries...

We’ve already investigated the letters...

To the churches in Ephesus...And Smyrna...

After leaving Smyrna...A letter carrier...

Traveled along the coast of the Aegean Sea...

For about forty miles...

Then the road turned northeast along the Caicus River...

About ten miles inland...Stood the impressive city of Pergamos...

Built on a hill...

One thousand feet above the surrounding countryside...

Creating a natural fortress...

Outshining Ephesus...As the leading city...In the region...

Pergamos...Had become the capital of the province of Asia...

And the center...Of Asian culture...

It was proud of its links with Rome...

Here’s what Jesus had to say to the Christians living in Pergamos...

I know that you live in the city...

Where Satan...Has his throne...

Yet...You have remained loyal to Me...

You refused to deny Me...Even when Antipas...

My faithful witness...Was martyred...

Among you there...In Satan’s city...

But I have a few complaints against you...

You got some stuff...Bout you...I don’t like...

You have a high tolerance for nonsense...

It seems...You tolerate those among you...

Who don’t mind serving other gods...

This surprises Me...Because you are faithful...

You are faithful...And I’m pleased with that...

It’s the compromising that I’m against...

You must not absentmindedly believe anything...

You must not get so distracted...

That you would believe a lie...

I’m warning you...Repent...

Repent of your sin...Or I will come to you suddenly...

With the sword of my mouth...

And fight against those who are leading you astray...

Anyone with ears...I suggest you listen...

Listen to the what the Spirit...And understand...

What He is saying to the churches...

To everyone who is victorious...

To everyone who remains faithful...

I will give some of the manna...

That’s hidden away in heaven...

And I will give to each one...A white stone...

And on that stone...Will be engraved...

A new name...A new name that no one understands...

Except the one...Who receives it.”...

Just like the first two letters...

Jesus begins the letter to Pergamos...By giving His credentials...

In the letter to the church in Ephesus...

Jesus described Himself as the One...

Who holds the seven stars...

And walks among the seven gold lampstands...

Jesus is always reminding us that He is always with us...

Watching out out us...

He tells the Church...Look...I’m with you...

Stop acting like you in this all by yourself...I got you...

To Smyrna...He says that He is the First...And the Last...

The God of all creation...Who knows the beginning...From the end...

But to the church in Pergamos...

Jesus provides a much more ominous...Sinister...Forbidding image...

He describes Himself as...

“The One with the sharp...Two-edged sword”...

This imagery...Just as with most of the letters...

Comes directly out of the first chapter...Of Revelation...

When John beholds the glory of Jesus...

There John said...

“When I turned to see who was speaking to me...

I saw seven...Gold lampstands...

And standing in the middle of the lampstands...

Was someone like...The Son of Man...

And a sharp...Two-edged sword...Came from His mouth”...

Does not the bible say...

“For the word of God is living and powerful...

And sharper than any two-edged sword...
