:5—“For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands,”
“For in this manner, in former times” shows a continuing path of integrity linked with the Old Testament. The same “manner” speaks to & thru both current & past. Our current moral path is one which has remained unchanged from the beginning. “Also” signifies a direct connection between distant generations.
It is God’s design that there always be “holy women.” These “holy women” have always “trusted in God.” Therefore these have always taken it upon themselves to “adorn themselves” with “the hidden person of the heart”(3:4). *Godly women always seek spiritual “adornment” above & to the exclusion of a merely outward “adornment”(spawned of the flesh)(3:3; 1Tim. 2:9-10).
In their spiritual “adornment”, “holy women” of the past exemplified such “holiness” & “adornment” thru their “being submissive to their own husbands.”
Such a “submission to their own husbands” was & is the God-ordained means of honoring God’s design with man as ‘head.’ God is the one who designed godly male headship in marriage, to be bolstered & maintained thru godly female submission to that headship. His(husband’s) word ought to be the last word!
There is no Christ-honoring example of women who ‘unjustifiably’ usurped the role of headship over their family.
•Abigail took it upon herself to ‘save’ her family which had fallen into her husband, Nabal’s(‘foolish’) neglect(1Sam. 25:2-42), but she did so without disrespect of her husband’s God ordained headship. She(as do all godly wives) submitted to that wifely role, knowing that God ultimately rewards those who trust Him.

“Former Times/In The Old Time/Of The Past/Formerly”—pote—Particle—1) Once i.e. Formerly, aforetime, at some time. Strong—indefinite adverb, At some time, ever.

“Holy”—agiov—Adj.—1) Most holy thing, a saint. Agiov has probably as its fundamental meaning separation, i.e., from the world to God's service. This separation, however, is not chiefly external, it is rather a separation from evil & defilement. The moral signification of the word is therefore the prominent one. This word, rare & of neutral meaning in classical Greek, has been developed in meaning, so that it expresses the full N.T. conception of holiness as no other does. Strong—Sacred(physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated).
“Women”—gunh—Noun Fem.—1) A woman of any age, whether a virgin, or married, or a widow; 2) a wife—2a) Of a betrothed woman. Strong—A woman; specially--A wife.
“Trusted/Hoped/Hoping/Put Their Hope”—elpizw—Verb—1) To hope—1a) in a religious sense--To wait for salvation with joy & full confidence; 2) Hopefully to trust in. Strong—To expect or confide.
“Also”—kai—Conjunction—1) And, also, even, indeed, but. Strong—apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative & sometimes also a cumulative force; And, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection(or composition) with other particles or small words.
“Adorned”(See :3—kosmov)—kosmew—Verb—1) To put in order, arrange, make ready, prepare; 2) To ornament, adore; 3) metaph.--To embellish with honor, gain honor. Strong—To put in proper order, i.e. Decorate(literally or figuratively); specially--To snuff(a wick). Used 10X.
From—kosmov—1) An apt & harmonious arrangement or constitution, order, government; 2) Ornament, decoration, adornment, i.e. The arrangement of the stars, 'the heavenly hosts', as the ornament of the heavens.
