“Wherefore come out from among them …” (2Co 6:17)

Text: 2Co 6:16-7:1

Paul, speaking to the Corinthians (the church – the believers).

“Wherefore” come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord (2Co 6:17).

2Co 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

Come out from among THEM

2Co 6:14 what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?

1Co 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Our fellowship is with Christ

1Co 1:9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

“Be ye holy”

1Pe 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

1Pe 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

1Pe 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

Heb 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

HOLINESS ~ pure; blameless; without sin; without fault

Holiness is God’s CHIEF attribute (not love): (Isa 6:1-3)

Isa 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Which is why we need Jesus Christ:

1Ti 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

Being forgiven is great! (Ep 1:7)

But being righteous in Jesus Christ is the bonus!! (Ro 10:4; 2Co 5:17)

This is how we are able to go to heaven, and be with God

Behold the Lamb of God (Jo 1:29, 36)

Who made us “sons” (Gal 4:5)

Like FATHER, like SON (Child)

2Co 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters …

2Co 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Jesus Christ came to SAVE us out of this world, because one day, it will bear His wrath:

1Th 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

And if you are NOT IN CHRIST, it will be a terrifying thing:

Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Php 3:9 ¶ And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

I have said all of this to prepare our hearts for the rest:

Jesus Christ came to take us out of the world (spiritually speaking, and one day physically). So we are already different (peculiar):

Tit 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

PECULIAR ~ beyond usual; not common; (refreshing)

Or are we COMMON? Nothing special? Nothing unusual?

As peculiar people in Christ:

Are we acting like strangers and pilgrims in this world?

1Pe 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

STRANGERS/PILGRIMS ~ “not from around here;” just passing through; non-citizens

e.g. USA, pilgrims and Indians

Are we being honest?

1Pe 2:12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

Honest ~ at work; with each other; with others

Are we living in submission?

1Pe 2:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

1Pe 2:15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

ORDINANCE ~ laws; rules

Are we shining as lights in this world?

Php 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
