Title: Come Up Here! Lessons from Revelation Part 4

For a few weeks now we have been in this series Lessons from Revelation. Have you seen so far that there is so much more in this book than what we have ever thought? It is not only about future events, but it also gives us much information for us right now.

In the letters to the seven churches the Lord began with a warning about losing your first love and ends up with the warning about becoming “lukewarm”. That is not only instructions for the churches but for us as individuals as well. We like to think that it is someone else’s responsibility to stir us up in the Spirit and light the fire or revival in our lives. And though it is true that sometimes there is something that is stirred in us through the preaching of another preacher or a special service at another venue, but here is the reality. If you have to rely on some special event to stir you up you are missing what the Lord requires of you. Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:6 (NKJV),

6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

So the admonition of the Lord to the church in Laodicea about being lukewarm is the call for them to do something about their condition.

And listen to this… at the end of that letter the Lord says this…

Revelation 3:20-22 (NKJV)

20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." ' "

Three things we learn from this passage…

1. There is a door to be opened…

2. There is communion to be experienced…

3. There is a Word to be heard…

I believe this is God’s word…

I believe it is for me…

I accept it as mine…

I will appropriate it to my life today…

I. There is a door to be opened… 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock… Question! When John saw this vision of the Lord walking among the lampstands in what sort of spiritual state was he? Was this something that he just conjured up or was the Lord’s hand in this? Revelation 1:10 (NKJV) 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet… I want you to see this connection between 3:20 and Revelation 4:1 (NKJV), After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, "Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this." In verse 20 Jesus is standing at the door and He is knocking, waiting for you to answer the door and let Him in. Even those who are saved Jesus is saying, “I want you to open your spiritual eyes and your heart and your mind to the things I want to show you.” It is so easy for us to become spiritually complacent – lukewarm – and not receive all the good things the Lord desires for us. We get so caught up in doing things in the church we forget to be the church. Now, this door that John is seeing in 3:1, there is something very significant about it. It is a door standing open in heaven. It is a different position. Before, the door was closed and Jesus was waiting for us to open it. Now it is open. That is a good first step. Jesus didn’t open it. Jesus does not force Himself into anyone’s life. John opened it. But this message is not for John alone. It is for the whole church. Revelation 1:3 (NKJV), Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near. Have we just read it or not? Have we heard it? Then there must be blessing for us and this open door is part of the blessing. The next thing to see is that when the door is opened, it does so in a new location. It has gone from being a closed door on earth (in the churches) to being an open door in heaven. Oh can you see this? When you open yourself to receive from the Lord, what takes place does so in a different dimension. It is now in heaven - a spiritual dimension. So what does that have to do with us today? Look at what Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus. Now keep in mind that this is the same church that lost it’s first love back in Revelation 2. Ephesians 1:15-19 (NKJV) 15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,
