Summary: We live in and under the authority of Jesus. Jesus authority was seen not only in His teaching, but was also witnessed in the deliverance of the demoniac.

Complete Authority

Mark 1:21-28

Mark 1:21-22 (HCSB)

Then they went into Capernaum, and right away He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach. They were astonished at His teaching because, unlike the scribes, He was teaching them as one having authority.

Distinctly Divine

- Teaching with authority

- Beyond mere knowledge

- Beyond good articulation

- Divine understanding

- Jesus was revealing His true identity

- A noticeable difference

- Beyond the normal teaching offered by the scribes

- Inspired

- Empowered

- In full revelation

Mark 1:23a (HCSB)

Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue…

The Unseen Enemy

- Satan…the pretender

- Seeks to hide his true identity

- Enters in through deception

- 2 Corinthians 11:14

2 Corinthians 11:14 (HCSB)

And no wonder! For Satan himself is disguised as an angel of light.

The Unseen Enemy

- Satan…the pretender

- Seeks to hide his true identity

- Enters in through deception

- 2 Corinthians 11:14

- The enemy’s mission

- Steal

- Kill

- Destroy

- 1 Peter 5:8

1 Peter 5:8 (HCSB)

Be sober! Be on the alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.

Mark 1:23b-24 (HCSB)

…He cried out, “What do You have to do with us, Jesus-Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are-the Holy One of God!”

The Truth Comes Out

- The demons know Jesus

- Their boundaries are set by Him

- They must yield to Him

- They cannot resist Him

- Acts 19:13-15

Acts 19:13-15 (HCSB)

Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists attempted to pronounce the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I command you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches!”

Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. The evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize-but who are you?”

The Truth Comes Out

- The demons know Jesus

- Their boundaries are set by Him

- They must yield to Him

- They cannot resist Him

- Acts 19:13-15

- Demonic testimony

- Declared Jesus’ identity

- Declared Jesus’ divinity

- Not by choice, but by compulsion

Mark 1:25-26 (HCSB)

But Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit convulsed him, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.

No Choice

- The demon

- Had to silence himself

- Had to depart from the possessed man

- By command

- Jesus spoke in the fullness of God’s authority

- The demon had no alternative

Mark 1:27-28 (HCSB)

Then they were all amazed, so they began to argue with one another, saying “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” His fame then spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee

An Expansion of Understanding

- The power of experience

- The teaching had moved from concept to reality

- The credibility and authority of Jesus was verified through the deliverance

- Unlike any other

- Jesus’ words had greater authority

- Jesus’ deeds set Him apart

- Reinforcing the authority of the teaching
