Summary: Down through the ages, God has always removed his people from coming judgment. The Day of the Lord will be no different
1 Thess 5:1-11 ¡V Day of the Lord
Susan¡¦s nightmare as a kid that she would be ¡§left behind¡¨
„X Was her fear justified? Do followers of Jesus Christ need to fear the terrible judgment of the day of the Lord
1 Thess 4:16-17 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words.
Anyone have a date for when this event will happen? Why not?
„X Notice the re-occurring theme of these verses
„X Zech. 14:1, 7, "Behold, the day of the Lord is coming,.....It shall be one day which is known to the Lord
„X Matt. 24:36, "But of that day and hour no one knows, no, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only."
„X Acts 1:6-7, "Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? And He said to them, It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority."
„X We used to have a theory, it was supposed to be 1975
„X Babylon fell to the Meades and Persians on 539BC. Add 2520 years (Monetary value of MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN) add one for year zero and subtract 7 for Nebuchnezzar years in wilderness and you come up with 1975
„X Guess what - It came and went
„X And guess how Paul who continues in the same subject matter responds to those who like to set dates
1 Thess 5:1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
„X Thieves broke into my car a couple of weeks ago while I was in the stadium playing volleyball
„X Came out and was shocked to see the quarter glass broken because it was totally unexpected
„X That what thieves do, they strike when you least expect it
„X But this is how the day of the Lord will come ¡V when we least expect it
„X Jesus said the same thing in Luke 17:26, 27
„X Luke 17:26-27 As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of man. They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.
„X Is there anything wrong with eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage?
„X No, the point Jesus is making is that these are the aspects of a normal, everyday life
„X But, just like I was caught unawares by the break-in of my car so the day of the Lord will come when it seems everything is proceeding normally
„X Jesus did not stop there. He went on to say,
„X Luke 17:28-30 Likewise as it was in the days of Lot -- they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built [normal, everyday life stuff] but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom fire and brimstone rained from heaven and destroyed them all -- so will it be on the day when the Son of man is revealed.
„X But what happens to God¡¦s people in both of these examples? They are removed before the judgment comes
„X So we see a pattern of God looking after his own when his judgment is about to fall
„X Luke 21:36 ¡§Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.¡¨
„X Lot of speculation about how God is going to protect his own during the Day of the Lord
„X Some talk of the ¡§secret rapture¡¨ or a ¡§place of safety¡¨
„X The Bible doesn¡¦t say one way or the other, it just says God will look after us
„X Its up to Him
„X If we look at previous examples there is no consistent pattern
„X In Noah¡¦s time he prepared an ark
„X In Lot¡¦s time, he walked them out
„X In 70AD, a window of opportunity opened up for God¡¦s people to escape Titus and his armies surrounding Jerusalem
„X Matt 24:40-41 Then two men will be in the field; one is taken and one is left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one is taken and one is left
