Easter And April Fools Day

1 Corinthians 15:12-28

12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?

[13] But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen.

[14] And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty.

[15] Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up--if in fact the dead do not rise.

[16] For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen.

[17] And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! [18] Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

[19] If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.

[20] But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

[21] For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead.

[22] For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.

[23] But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming.

[24] Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.

[25] For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.

[26] The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.

[27] For "He has put all things under His feet." But when He says "all things are put under Him," it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted.

[28] Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.

Today is Easter Sunday, the day we celebrate

the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

Have you noticed Easter doesn’t always fall on the same date?

Have you ever wondered why?

Easter always falls on the first Sunday

following the first full moon of the spring equinox,

so while the day of the week, Sunday, stays the same,

the date can vary by almost 6 weeks.

This year Easter falls on April 1, April Fool’s Day.

That hasn’t happened since 1956.

In 2029 it will land right on April 1st --April Fool’s Day again.

The origin of April Fool’s Day is unclear.

One theory is that it came into being when the Julian calendar,

which placed the new year around the March equinox,

was replaced with the Gregorian calendar,

which placed the new year January 1.

People who didn’t know about the change or refused to accept it

and continued to celebrate the new year in the spring

were called April fools.

Most of us have played April Fool’s jokes on others,

or have had these jokes played on us.

I always tried to fool Pat on April Fools Day.

Sometimes I did and sometimes she was waiting for it.

What if history’s worst fooling

turned out to be that we were counting on for a salvation

that didn’t exist?

Most fair historians will admit that Jesus did exist.

Some even admit He was put to death on a Roman cross.

However, the resurrection of Jesus is doubted by many.

If Jesus really did arise from the dead

it places Him far above all other people who have ever lived.

It also establishes Christianity as the only path to God.

The resurrection defies logic and reason.

Some people suggest someone may have stolen the body of Jesus

and that would explain the empty tomb.

Others have suggested Jesus never really died on the cross,

but was just unconscious and woke up 3 days later.

This is what the Muslims believe about the resurrection of Jesus.

There is not another doctrine of our faith

that is so vital to us than the resurrection.

Our faith stands or falls based on the truth of the resurrection.

If Jesus is still dead, then we are all April Fools!

Paul wrote a letter to the church in Corinth.

Some people in that church began to doubt the resurrection.

Paul wanted to assure them Jesus was indeed alive

and believing that He arose from the dead

was vital to their faith.

So, are we fools to believe that?

Point #1. The Bible Would Be A Hoax If Jesus Is Dead.

Throughout Jesus’ life he made many outrageous claims.

He claimed to be the Messiah, the Son of God,
