Summary: How to deal with this election.
Today, I’m doing something that I’ve never done. I’m going to address the election from the pulpit. I’ve heard it said that there are 2 things you should never talk about RELIGION (I’ve pretty much blown that one) and Politics. I figured why not be 2 for 2. As Christians our faith should inform every area of our lives. Right? We are to be informed and led by the truth of God’s Word.
Please open your bibles with me to John 8:31 (pg. ____) Jesus says “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
This is why we study the bible, to know the truth. And when we know and apply His truth to our lives we are blessed.
The same is true of our country. Remember a few weeks ago I shared with you that China had done extensive research as to why America has had such a powerful influence economically and otherwise in the world. They concluded it was because of our long standing foundation of faith. Sadly, as we move away from our foundational faith the opposite begins to happen. Listen, when the truth of God’s word is applied properly it brings blessing.
I think all of us want the best for our country. But the truth is, many are concerned with the direction we seem to be going. We have some significant troubles…(TAB)financially troubles (almost 20 trillion dollars in debt.) with no end in sight… which leads to an economy that can’t seem to get traction. (TAB) Political troubles (and I’m not just talking about this crazy presidential election mess). We have a two party system that simply can’t work together on almost anything. (TAB) Socially troubles, all of us have seen the violence and riots in Charlot, Furgeson, etc. (TAB) Moral troubles, whether it’s marriage, gender or sexuality the lines continue to be blurred. And (TAB) then there are International troubles: Isis who calls us “The great Satan” and want us destroyed. Those are just a few.
And here we are 23 days from a presidential election and we don’t feel like we can trust either one of the major party candidates.
-One candidate has an email scandal that get’s worst by the day. Especially in light of wikileeks.
-The other candidate has spoken so disparagingly toward women, and now with all the allegations of misconduct… all of it just makes you want to throw your hands up and walk away.
Seriously, I’ve heard several say they just aren’t going to vote. (TAB – Why vote?) I mean why? Some are seriously asking that question. Why do we vote? Most vote because they want someone to provide (TAB) Solutions to our problems, our troubles. Someone we trust, who cares about this country like we do. Solutions that will make life better: for us, our kids and grandkids. We want Solutions – that’s why we vote.
And Sometimes we need solutions to troubles that we might not even realize are brewing. One example that goes right to the core of WHY AMERICA IS A SUCCESS. Remember I said the Chinese studied us and found that its’ the foundation of faith we’ve had that has made us so strong in the world.
Well, are you aware that OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY is coming under assault. It’s true, yet this gets very little to no coverage on a lot of news outlets. Let me give you some examples you can look into yourself.
In Oregon, (TAB) Aaron and Melissa Klein were forced to close their bakery? Or face potential fines of $135,000 because they declined to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding, due to their faith.
Or the Oregon Circuit Judge Vance Day. He faces the possibility of being removed from the bench, in part for declining to perform same-sex weddings, His faith doesn’t allow it.
Or Florist Barronelle Stutzman in Washington State, who faces professional ruin because she declined to design flower arrangements for a long-time customer’s same sex wedding - she even referred the customer to another florist in area who would do it.
One more: The Storman Family who own a Pharmacy in Olympia, Washington. They are Christians so have chosen to not carry or sell the abortion inducing drug that goes by the name “Plan B”. Even though there are dozens of other pharmacies in the area that do carry it… still the Storman’s were taken to court for not selling it. After losing in state and federal court, they filed a petition to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. But with Justice Scalia’s death earlier this year, they didn’t get enough votes for a hearing. Which means, the lower courts rulings are upheld. When the hearing wasn’t granted Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito shared this remark, (TAB) “If this is a sign of how religious liberty claims will be treated in the years ahead, those who value religious freedom have cause for great concern.”
