This verse from the book of Jeremiah was given to me as a prophetic word to me when first starting in the ministry of SermonIndex. Though not understanding of the full implications of such a verse one thing was clear to me over the years that in modern christianity there is a lot of "prophesying of lies." What a tragic time where multitudes of speakers of glowing TV sets give false promises and lies to the people of God. Not only that but many encourage the casting off of all restraint of any sort of religious self denial of the flesh nature. Preachers who love money abound where they look as if they are selling god for a few copper coins of carnal cash. No right minded believer in our day can really look at the situation and think everything is ok. Evangelical American Christianity is being sifted and found wanting. The truth is lying fallen on the streets. And to add sorrow upon sorrow as Jeremiah writes, "my people love it this way." The Church has survived times of testing where false prophets abounded, lairs were lauded, and truth seemed unclear. Several early Church councils meet to simple discuss the divinity of Jesus Christ, his manhood and Deity. This fundamental truth was under attack since the beginning within the Church and without. One of the largest religions in the world started with the premise that Jesus was just a prophet and man not God. Most if not all cults agreed to this untruth of Jesus being created and just a man.
It is interesting to note that in the passage it is said, "the priests rule by their own authority" another way to translate it is, ""the priests remove, or depart by their means." Essentially, what is being said is that the priests through listening to the false prophets departed from the law and order of God. So you have a priesthood that is not doing what is supposed to do. In our day we have pastors seeking to do try a different way of Church, trying different methods and ideas. It seems anything goes in our day and the goal is to please the people. It is the same in Jeremiah's day where the Church of his day left from its godly rule of teaching people between the holy and unholy (Ezekiel 44:23). God is not looking to do Church in a new way but rather to see a continuance of the godly way of teaching his people from right and wrong. Though the Church can have different forms, institutions, systems, the life of the Church continues in our day of those who will not compromise the truths of God's Word and submit to leaders who fear the Lord and serve him rightly. Though the people in Jeremiah's day by-in-large enjoyed the perverted priesthood who did not teach against sin may we not in our day join with such who are seeking religion that will tickle the ears but not bring one closer to the Lord.
