Building God’s House - 4 – Café Church

Are we ready to go another round with Evangelism?

• First, let me rephrase something I said last time

• A very wise person came up to me after last week and said to me a better question to ask would be “How many people have you witnessed to?” rather than “how many people have you led to Jesus Christ?”

Today it’s your turn to share your evangelism experiences

• Let me start by showing you this chart on “God’s design for building his church” (See below)

• This is the process God has used down through the centuries to build His church

• If this process is interrupted, then what was meant to be a blessing to all nations ceases to happen

Acts 3:24-26 “Yes, and all the prophets, from Samuel and those who follow, as many as have spoken, have also foretold these days.25 “You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’26 “To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.”

• We have to believe the gospel is a blessing and that it needs to be shared with others?

Galatians 3:8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.”

• So it is imperative that we facilitate this blessing

• Now it seems I have given the impression that I don’t believe we are doing good works

• I have no doubts at all that people are doing “good works”

• But, and I hope this is not a surprise to anyone but…good works is not the gospel of Jesus Christ

• We have all sorts of government agencies who do a lot of good works, but do they solve the world’s spiritual problems?

• The world’s problems stem from spiritual issues and therefore require spiritual solutions

• You can’t fix spiritual problems with a physical solution

• That’s like putting a band-aid on your arm for a case of the measles

• Remember the diagram on why the church exists – Worship, Community, Outreach – Monastery, Social welfare Agency, Para-church organization

• If all we are doing are good works, we are no better than a social welfare agency

• So simply doing good works is not going to solve the world’s problems

• The only answer to the world’s problems is a spiritual solution and that lies in a relationship with Jesus Christ

• And that’s what Acts 2:25 said, And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’

• So somewhere along the line the good works have to be supplemented with the gospel

• That, I think is where our problem lies. We are good at doing the physical, but reluctant to mention the spiritual

• Eventually we have to link the good works with Jesus Christ

Now it’s your turn – want you to share your evangelism experiences

• We want to do this to show you it is something that should flow naturally and second, there are different ways to evangelize

• We want you to learn what works best for you bearing in mind it was Jesus who said, “I will make you fishers of men”, with the emphasis on the “I”

• Jacqui, Carol, Susan, Rob, David, Rory

So through this process we have identified three different ways to evangelize

1. Personal - Personal situations are by far the best – touching people with the love of God in your family, your circle of friends, those you work and study with

• Sooner or later, life being what it is, something is going to happen where they need the love of Jesus Christ in their lives

2. Church Based Programs – cookie ministry, “Encounter”, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Door knocking, Carols service, Christmas and Easter services

3. Community Based Programs - Volunteering your services to help community based organizations such as Community Health Services, Salvation Army, RE teachers, Council of Churches

• Brochures on volunteer services

• Our ultimate goal with each of these methods is the same - to build trust with these people so we can put them in touch with Jesus Christ the real answer to their spiritual problems

• The type of program is immaterial, it is simply a bridge to build trust

• Our goal in this is to find what works for us and allow Jesus to teach us to become fishers of men

• We have to begin to make evangelism as important an aspect of our Christian walk as “prayer” or “Bible Study”
