“Facing the Giants in Our Lives”

Text: I Samuel 17:40-47

40 ¶ And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.

42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.

Introduction:

We as people whether saved or unsaved face giants in our lives from time to time. Some are big giants and others are very BIG GIANTS. We see in I Samuel 17:4 that Goliath was any where from a big giant to a very BIG GIANT. “And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.” A cubit is any where from 18-20 inches and a span is 9 inches. That would have put a Goliath anywhere from 9’9’’ to 11’ 9’’. In human eyes those giants are impossible to get rid of and destroy. We have the tendency to say, “I can’t do it.” That is of the devil, because with God all things are possible. John 16:33 says, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:9 “And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” Over the next few weeks we are going to look at some giants that can come or could be in our lives that need to be over taken and destroyed.

But in the message this morning I want us to look at how we can be overcomes when Facing the Giants in Our Lives. There are three simple but difficult steps we need to take. Let us look at them.

I. Never give up.

Verse 46 says: “This day will the LORD deliver thee into

mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from

thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the

Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild

beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a

God in Israel.”

II. Never back down.

Verse 48 says: “And it came to pass, when the Philistine

arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David

hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.”

III. Never lose faith.

Look at the Israelite when it came time for them to go over

into the promise land the first time. They believed the

majority of the spies that there were giants in the land to big

for them to fight. There were only two people out of a

couple million people that never lost faith. They said, “Come on, we can do it, let go for it.” These two men had courage and faith to believe that there was nothing impossible for their God.

Conclusion:

Fear is the biggest factor in losing the battle and losing the victory. Did you know that, do not fear is mentioned 365 times in the Bible? That tells me that God does not want us fearing one single day of the year in our life time as long as we keep our trust in Him. The phase “fear not” is mentions 60 times. That tells me that we are not to fear one single second or minute of the day. So don’t fear for in Isaiah 46:4 God says: “And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.”
