Finding Answers in the Book

Text, Psalm 119:130 “The unfolding of thy words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.”

Introduction:

A little girl busy at her arithmetic lesson had one ear open to the conversation of her parents about some of their problems. Finally, she said out of her homework experience, “Why don’t you look for the answers in the back of the book?”

Man fairly bristles with questions and his questions have their best answers in the Bible.

I. The most common problem for all of us these crowded days is fatigue.

Our doctors are warning us that America is becoming a nation of tired people. TV commercials would have us believe that it is due to iron-poor blood, and suggests a product which has more iron in each dose than is to be found in a whole pound of calf’s liver. The growers of organic food claim that commercial fertilizers are inadequate to enrich the mineral starved soils of our nation. Whether or not there is any truth in these claims, I am not prepared to say, but I am sure that one may become a victim of fatigue, and out of fatigue often comes the sense of uselessness and doubt. Fatigue is the devil’s weapon, and how effectively he uses it on church people, especially on Sunday nights or mid-week prayer services. On these nights some people lose most of their get up and go. We are reminded often by the psychologists that much of our tiredness is in our minds, and there is some truth in their claim, concerning the Sunday night and Wednesday night fatigue.

If you are afflicted by this devil-inspired fatigue, go to the Book for your answer. In Matthew 11:28 there is a verse for you from the lips of Jesus. “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Turn to Isaiah and read, “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.” Teach me Lord to wait. Learn some of these uplifting verses, and when you feel as if you are dragging the ground, repeat them to yourself again and again. They are gateways to deliverance. God will help you.

God keeps His promises. “According to your days so shall your strength be.” Keep in constant touch with your Lord. Every night a little girl knelt at her bedside and prayed while mother stood nearby. One night she prayed longer than usual. “Why did you pray so long tonight?” The little girl said, “Today in church we sang a song that said ‘Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees.’ I wanted to make him tremble a little longer.”

II. If you could scratch beneath the surface of the average person’s pretended self-sufficiency and don’t-care attitude you might find him “troubled over his sins”. He is thoroughly ashamed and troubled about things in his past. Copernicus was a great mathematician. His studies and calculations revolutionized the thinking of mankind about the universe. On his deathbed, his latest book The Revolution of the Heavenly Body, was placed in his hands. It had just been printed. At death’s door he saw himself not as a great scholar, but only as a sinner in need of a savior. On the tombstone of his grave are carved the following words which he chose for his epitaph: “I do not seek a kindness equal to that given to Paul, nor do I ask the grace granted to Peter. By that forgiveness which thou didst grant to the robber that earnestly I crave.”

Like a golden thread through the fabric of the Bible runs the assurances of God’s love and forgiveness. Isaiah 1:18 says, “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow, though they be red, like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

The Bible sets before us Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world. I once had a beautiful engraving of the Constitution of the United States. When held at a distance one discovered that the words and letters had been arranged to present an outline of the face of George Washington. So likewise we read the bible, the eye of faith may see standing forth from the printed page the face of Jesus Christ.

The Bible says, Isaiah 53:6, “All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned everyone to his own way and the Lord hat laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”

The Bible says Romans 3:22-23 “For there is no difference, all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God.”

The Bible says, “The soul that sinneth it shall die.” John 3:16.
