Summary: Think about it, the creator of the majestic heavens is also the creator of man’s heart! Talk about reigning intimate in our lives! From God’s fixed place in heaven, He can powerfully fix anything broken in the human heart!

It’s not clear who this writer is in Psalm 97, but we do know he is consumed with God being perfectly fixed in heaven! And all he can do is shout, “The Lord reigns!”

Only God who is self sustaining and self sufficient can boast of these attributes! Have you ever thought of God as being so balanced, so fixed and so complete that it just boggles your mind!

Isaiah 55:9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."

Since God’s ways are infinite and His thoughts infinitely beyond human comprehension, this verse reminds us that the height of the heavens is also infinite. Do you understand that space is as far beyond our mathematical calculations as is God Himself? Our minds, operating in limited time and, cannot even comprehend the boundless heavens and then try to contemplate the beauty of heaven’s Creator! Even in our contemplation of God we eventually have to reach for the aspirin!

Psalm 145:7 “Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! His greatness is beyond our discovery.” NLT

No wonder in our text, the writer says, “He reigns!”...

1. Creatively. Vs. 1b

Psalm 33:6 “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.”

“Host of them” = galaxies - how did David know there were more than one galaxy? To the deepest space and all the planetary bodies along with the angels!

NASA Slide 1: A one-million-second exposure of a small fraction of the sky reveals thousands of distant galaxies. This image is the deepest portrait of the visible universe ever made.

NASA Slide 2: A violent and fiery-looking mass of gas and dust glows within a supernova remnant. The object, called N63A, is what is left of a massive star that exploded, throwing its gaseous layers out into even deeper space. N63A lies within a star-forming region, some 169,000 light-years away from the Milky Way.

NASA Slide 3: A composite image of the Messier galaxy shows what astronomers call a "grand design" spiral galaxy, where each of its arms curls all the way down into its center. Located about 12 million light-years away in the Ursa Major constellation, M81 is among the brightest of the galaxies visible by telescope from Earth.

NASA Slide 4: Clouds of dust swaddling the stars of the Seven Sisters cluster, also known as the Pleiades. The cluster, located some 400 light-years away, it contains thousands of stars.

NASA Slide 5: A shot that amazed NASA, a new galaxy being formed in such beauty and splendor, 200 million light years from earth!

2. Mysteriously. Vs. 2a

You may not be able to trace the hand of God, but you can always trust the heart of God!

C.L. Bremer, an atheist turned Christian, was once asked, “How much do you know about God?” to that he responded, “I know very little about God, but what little I know has radically changed my life.”

3. Righteously. Vs. 2b

Psalm 33:5 “He loves righteousness and justice, the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.”

4. Majestically. Psalm 93:1a

Psalm 145: 5 “I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty.”

5. Powerfully. Psalm 93:1b

“Moved” = totter. God’s power is so fixed that he alone keeps this earth steady. This writer expresses confidence in the fixed laws of nature before we knew anything about them! From God’s fixed place in heaven He can powerfully fix anything broken in the human heart, and because God still reigns, He can produce His power in your life at anytime!

Moses understood this…I want to share with you a great song sung spontaneously about the sovereignty of God by Moses…

Exodus 15:1-18

I dare you to release God into your situation – you’re life may be up against a Red Sea, but watch Him work – trust Him to reign powerfully!

6. Eternally. Psalm 93:2

7. Intimately. Psalm 33:13-15

Follow this…

Isaiah 45:18 “Who formed the heavens and Who formed the earth?

Isaiah 45:7 “I formed the light…”

Psalm 94:5 “You have formed the summer and winter…”

Amos 4:13 “God formed the mountains…”

Genesis 2:7 “The Lord God formed man of the dust of the earth…”

Isaiah 44:2 “Who formed you from the womb?”

Psalm 139:13 “For You have formed my inward parts.”

Psalm 94: 9 “Who formed the eye?”

Zechariah 12:1 “Who forms the spirit of man within him?”

Folks from the most incredible to the most invisible God reigns!

No wonder Paul said, “We live and breathe and have our being in God.”

Psalm 33:13-15 “The Lord looks from heaven, sees the all the sons of men. From the place of His habitation He looks on all the inhabitants of the earth; He forms their hearts…”
